The Home's History
Set on an elevated, secluded spot on Kinder Scout, the estate dates back to at least the 14th century. It has welcomed notable figures including writers, industrialists, politicians, and royalty. In the late 1800s, Sir James Watts retained the house as his private shooting lodge while surrounding land became a reservoir. The property was enhanced by leading architects and craftsmen, with woodlands planted for game. Agatha Christie, related to the Watts family by marriage, stayed here while working on her novels, adding to the home’s rich heritage.
