Walking & Countryside
High Lane is perfectly placed for exploring some of the best walking countryside in Cheshire and the western edge of the Peak District. From gentle canal strolls to scenic parkland and hillier routes with wide views, there is something for walkers of all abilities.

The Macclesfield Canal runs directly through High Lane, offering peaceful, mostly flat towpath walks ideal for relaxed outings, dog walks, or longer rambles north towards Marple or south towards Poynton. The canal links into a wider network of routes, making it easy to combine waterway walking with countryside footpaths.

Close by, the Middlewood Way provides a traffic-free walking and cycling route along a former railway line, connecting High Lane with Marple and Macclesfield. Its smooth surface and gentle gradients make it popular year-round.

Just a short walk or drive away, Lyme Park is one of the area’s highlights. This extensive National Trust estate offers a range of walks through open parkland, woodland, and rolling hills, with panoramic views across Cheshire and into the Peak District. Routes range from short, easy loops near the house and ponds to longer circular walks taking in The Cage viewpoint and surrounding countryside.

For more adventurous walkers, High Lane also provides easy access to Peak District footpaths, including links to the Gritstone Trail, Goyt Valley, and surrounding moorland. These routes offer more challenging terrain and dramatic scenery while remaining close to the village.
