What to Do in the Peak District (Even If You’re Not a Walker)

Discover the best things to do in the Peak District without hiking – from historic houses to charming villages and scenic train rides.

  • Peak District

The Peak District is best known for its hiking trails, rugged hills, and wide-open moorland – but if you're not the hiking boot type, don’t worry. You don’t have to trek up Mam Tor or conquer Kinder Scout to enjoy what this beautiful region has to offer.

Whether you're into heritage, food, charming villages, or just a slower pace of travel, the Peak District has plenty to fill your days – no walking boots required.

1. Explore Chatsworth House

If there’s one place that proves you don’t need to break a sweat to enjoy the Peak District, it’s Chatsworth House. This stately home is one of the UK’s most famous – it was even Mr. Darcy’s home in the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice! Wander through opulent rooms, admire the art collection, or simply take in the views over the Derwent Valley from the gardens. There's also a brilliant farm shop and café nearby.

2. Visit the Market Town of Bakewell (Yes, for the Tart)

Bakewell is more than just the home of the famous pudding – it’s also one of the most charming spots in the area. Browse independent shops, stroll by the river, or enjoy a relaxed afternoon tea. Stay nearby in one of our luxury Peak District holiday homes for easy access to Bakewell’s cafes and culture.

3. Discover the Heights of Abraham (Without Climbing)

In Matlock Bath, you can glide up the hillside in a cable car to reach the Heights of Abraham, a hilltop park with stunning views, show caves, and exhibitions. It feels adventurous without being exhausting – and the panoramic views across the valley are worth the ride alone.

4. Tour the Caverns in Castleton

If you're not keen on walking uphill, you can go under the hills instead. Castleton is known for its fascinating caverns, including Speedwell Cavern (where you ride a boat through underground tunnels) and Peak Cavern, with its massive natural entrance. It's a fun, unusual way to see a different side of the landscape – especially if the weather isn't on your side.

5. Stroll the Streets of Tissington or Eyam

If you're after a gentle potter and some proper English village charm, head to Tissington or Eyam. Tissington is famed for its well dressings and pretty stone houses, while Eyam has a remarkable (and poignant) history as the "plague village." Both are peaceful, picturesque, and ideal for a laid-back day out.

6. Ride a Vintage Train

Catch a ride on a heritage railway, like the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, for a nostalgic journey through the countryside. It’s a lovely way to see the Peak District from a window seat rather than a hilltop – and a great option for families or rainy-day adventures.

7. Enjoy a Long Lunch at a Country Pub

One of the Peak District’s greatest pleasures? A slow meal in a warm pub. Cosy up by the fire in winter or enjoy a beer garden in summer. Look out for local ale, seasonal menus, and views that beg you to stay a little longer. Many are just a short drive from our luxury holiday homes in the Peak District, so there’s no need to rush.
